Google Makes Link Information Available to Webmasters
Feb 07, 2007 - Search Engine Marketing >>>
Google has finally given webmasters the ability to see a true picture of the inbound links Googlebot has recorded. - Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) you'll have to use the Google Webmaster Tools website to get at the information.
To get into the site you'll need a Google account -- the same one you use for Adwords and Adsense administration. Then you will have to register each website you want to view statistics for. The registration process requires access to the site so you can upload some special code. Once you're verified as the owner or administrator of the site you'll have access to a broad range of statistics.
These stats are quite comprehensive and potentially quite helpful. Google will tell you how many inbound links are recorded to your entire site, and break it down into links to each page within the site. The stats also distinguish between internal and external links (external links come from other sites.) So if you see something in these stats you don't like this gives you the opportunity to try to change it.
Of course, as with all the search engines, merely being listed does not mean a link is doing you much good. But at least it is a start.
If you are a webmaster, it is well worth having a look at this new Google feature. For more information, see Google's Webmaster Blog.
