The Japanese Watch Industry
We have divided the activities of our whole day into hours, minutes, and seconds because we have become very dependant on it. This is the way that the human psyche has become now, they are always fussing about time in one way, or another, let it be keeping time, being on time, or time management.
It is believed to be an obsession of the recent age, but it goes back to the times of Egyptians, and Mesopotamians. One of the ancient examples of this obsession is the Egyptian sundial, which was made some where in the 1500 B.C. Apart from this, time keeping is a different phenomenon that has its own ancient history. After the invention of the sundial, the technology of time keeping has gone through many changes, and has evolved with the human society.
The monks of the monasteries are believed to be the first ones to develop the mechanical clock in order to match their meditations with the time. It was sort of an alarm for them. Apart from the twenty-four hours of the day, remaining division of time of the whole day was dependant on the chimes of the bells. With the passage of time all this was further divided into hours, and then into minutes, and seconds.
Japan is considered the pioneer country in the making of watches. Their most popular and renowned brand is Seiko, which is the one of the largest watch making industries of the world. The history of Seiko tells that it has faced destruction in both the world wars, and even after all that they have managed to establish themselves as a great name in its type making it into an international timepiece industry.
They adopted the strategy of providing the good quality product at such a rate that is affordable by many people; they started their production with this target in mind. The founder of the Seiko, Kintaro Hattori, very wisely named the company as Seiko, which in Japanese means precise. He laid the foundations of this company in the year 1892. The first Seiko pocket watches were launched in 1895, and their first wristwatches were launched in 1913.
The history of Seiko debriefs us with the business processing, and thinking of many Japanese manufacturers. In the beginning, simple technology, and designs were imported, and then they facilitated their growth at home for the required parts. The more complex products came later with further production, and improvement in quality control. Their first exports were to the closest Asian neighbours, which later expanded to Europe, and then, further all the way to United States, which ultimately resulted in world leadership in watch making technology.
They have recently developed the art of fine watches. Seiko started manufacturing mechanical watches when the Swiss watch exports increased in the decade of 90s. They hired experienced watchmakers for the purpose. They opened a Shizukuishi watch studio was started in the year 2004.
There is not a single person on earth who can escape time. Somehow, our lives are dependent on time. Everything we have, such as cell phones, etc have a time telling feature in them. A lot man companies and designer brands have taken advantage of this obsession, and have introduced a large variety of luxury, and collectible watches.
