Who Is A Funeral Director And What Are His Main Responsibilities

The primary function of a funeral director is to make all preparations for the funeral service up to the handling of the body at the burial or cremation.

There are four important duties of a funeral director, they are: (a) transporting the body to the mortuary; (b) embalming and preparing the body for the ceremony; (c) preparing for the services for friends and family to pay their last respects to the deceased and; (d) the final act of cremation or burial according to the customs of the family.

These duties cover a wide variety of jobs, which include arrangement of hearse for carrying the body, deliberation on the venue and time for memorial service and also sending obituaries in the electronic media and in the newspapers. In addition, the funeral directors also have to ensure that the flowers and decorations are in place. Besides this, they have to make the body ready for the service by bathing and embalming it and arrange transportation for the relatives assembling for the service.

Other than these jobs, a funeral director also handles the necessary paperwork that forms a part of the formalities that follow a person’s death. He helps in obtaining a proper death certificate for the deceased. He is also entrusted with other tasks like helping the family with getting the insurance money and to take benefit of veterans’ burial scheme. He also helps in clearing pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased to the beneficiaries of the deceased and helps the family in assessing the costs of the whole funeral proceedings.

He also has to work in collaboration with a lot of people and should coordinate with all of them for successfully accomplishing his jobs. He has to interact with not just the casket makers and flower sellers but also priests and doctors.

Last but not the least, it is essential for funeral directors to come forward and provide some solace to the grieving family on a personal level, so as to help them tide over the loss of a loved one. Though it is a critical aspect of the job, a few funeral directors usually consider it a trivial responsibility.
