Free Web Tools are everywhere on the web
Free Web Tools are everywhere on the web
If you are new to the web you will appreciate all the
help you can find to get your website up and running. There are a number of
sites that make free web tools available to the rookie web designer, as well as
more advanced webmasters. These free tools range from small scripts used to
perform limited tasks (like visitor counters or traffic monitors) to more
extensive programs that help you design your entire website (html editors and
page layout tools). You can even find well designed free programs that do things
like provide "Live Help" (which is basically an on-site chat utility), run a
user forum, or automate your link exchange program.
Some of these programs are provided free of charge
by your web host. They are often built right into your domain and you are not
even aware of it. For instance one of my hosts includes about 20 free scripts
that allow me to add things to my site like a Photo Gallery, User Forum, Content
Management, limited E-Commerce, serveral Blogging programs, and detailed
traffic monitoring. Another of my hosts throws in a completely free
browser-based site design tool. You can work from built-in templates to design
your entire site without having to know any .html. At least that is what they
claim.
Many of these scripts are written by programmers
and web designers as part of the Open Source Initiative. These are generally
collaborative efforts where a "community" of programmers work together to
develop and enhance a particular project. The granddaddy of such programs is the
UNIX operating system itself, along with popular variants like Linux and Free
BSD. Yes, you can actually find an assortment of complete operating systems
(alternatives to Windows) with all the bells and whistles and many highly
developed applications.
But most of us are not interested in the more
complicated aspects of "Open Source". However, we are interested in useful free
programs that run on the desktops and servers we are currently using. And yes,
there are many Open Source programs that fall into this category.
One way to find what you need is to do a search for
"Free Web Tools". Or if you are looking for something specific like a "free html
editor", or "free image editor" do a search for that. Sometimes these free tools
will be limited editions of more powerful (not free) versions. Other times they
will only work for a short period, like 30 days, after which time you have to
either stop using them or buy a registered copy.
This is one reason why it is useful to determine if
the particular program you are considering is "Open Source". If it is, the
verion you download will not be a demo or time limited. It will be a free full
version.
