A recent report by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) confirmed that six out of 10 UK employers are finding it difficult to find suitable graduates for technical positions such as IT. In other words, there is a shortage of IT graduates and opportunities for people interested in taking IT training.
That means there are many high paying IT positions in the UK not being filled by home-grown graduates. Employers are often forced to go offshore to find suitable candidates for technical positions in many IT fields.
The CBI report involved a survey of 735 UK firms and the results clearly show that there is a serious skills shortage in fields requiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The study found that almost 60% of the firms polled said they were having difficulty finding suitable graduates with the appropriate skills.
As a result many large recruiting firms are looking to India, China, Eastern Europe, and other places around the world to find graduates with the skills required to fill these jobs.
From one perspective this suggests that UK educational institutions are not meeting the needs of industry. It also suggests technical fields such as IT have a perception problem. For whatever reason, many young people making career decisions do not see IT as an attractive option.
However, from a more positive perspective, these numbers clearly suggest there is tremendous opportunity in the UK IT industry for individuals with the appropriate qualifications.
It also makes the IT training offered by UK companies even more important. Focused and concentrated IT training helps address the skills shortage the UK is facing. It also offers graduates of such IT training courses a fantastic opportunity to find extremely lucrative positions in companies looking for the exact skill set these graduates acquire.
In fact the curriculum of the most effective IT training courses is based directly on current industry needs. So graduates of IT certification programs will find themselves with exactly the kind of qualifications required by thousands of businesses immediately upon graduation.
Such programs even make it possible to acquire IT skills on an incremental basis - by taking just the courses required to meet specific industry qualifications. And there is such a crying need for qualified people in most IT areas, it is often possible for people taking certification programmes to find UK entry level positions in IT after their first few qualifications are completed.
The demand for IT professionals in the UK has been strong for more than two decades, and industry analysts actually see this demand accelerating as all kinds of UK firms implement more sophisticated IT infrastructures. That means there is no end in sight when it comes to IT job growth in the UK. Well into the future there will be no shortage of high paying positions open to qualified graduates in a wide range of IT sectors.
